Collecting with Shawn Stockman
Grammy Award Winner and entrepreneur, Shawn Stockman on watches, guitars and collecting ideologies.
One universal truth about collecting is the importance of trusting your intuition. No one exemplifies this better than Grammy Award Winner and entrepreneur, Shawn Stockman. In this special edition Collector Conversation, Senior Client Advisor C’Quon Gottlieb joins Stockman in Thousand Oaks, California’s Revolver Studios to discuss the correlation between different types of collecting, and their corresponding motivations.
Every collector has their motivation. For Stockman, it all comes down to form, function and a lot of heart. Problems watching the video? Watch here.
Form
“Being an artist, you search for something different. Wear what you like. Wear something quirky. Wear something that looks weird. That’s what it’s all about — to have something on your wrist and have people talking about it. I don’t like to look like the crowd. I like being the guy who sticks out.”
Function
“In my collection, I can wear the same watch getting up in the morning and taking my kids to school, that I would when I’m suited and booted. I’m a dad. I’m a traveler. My watches have to compliment my lifestyle. Most of the time, I’m getting up and making breakfast for the kids, then I have to take them to school, and after, I’ll go and sing for 15,000 people.”
Heart
“No pair of hands are alike. The way I play a particular guitar, I can throw it to John Mayer and he’d play it a totally different way. I throw it to Josh Smith and he’d play it a different way. It has to feel good in your hands and a lot of this philosophy correlates back to watches. It has to feel good on your wrist, and good to you so you can wear it confidently.”
